Tips On Effective Email Writing: Email Security

October 20, 2009 By: ecpmmain Category: Articles

One of the most dreadful things about e-mails is the possibility of getting scammed or being victimized by identity theft. How can you ensure your security when opening marketing e-mails? Let’s discuss some important points on email marketing that focuses on e-mail security.

Using just one account.

It is recommended to have at least three different e-mail accounts – for personal contacts, work or professional contacts, and for subscribing to ads and newsletters. This way, all your important a-mails are separated from unimportant mails. You can also easily dismiss your e-mail account when it gets spammed without worrying about losing your important messages.

Forgetting to log-out of your account.

You need to more careful and alert especially when using public or shared computers. Make sure you’ve completely logged out from your e-mail or social site accounts. To be sure, close out  the browser before leaving the computer for the next user.

Delete cache, history, and passwords.

Another way to protect yourself especially when using public computers is to delete the cache, history and passwords that are saved in the browser. This can be done by going to the Internet Options of the Internet Explorer Browser. If you’re using Mozilla, go to Tools and click on Clear Private Data.

Don’t send sensitive information through e-mail.

One important thing to realize is that e-mails are never one hundred percent safe. Hackers can get through it and seize important information. If you want to send a very confidential information, don’t e-mail it.

Use the CC and the BCC options carefully.

People often make the mistake of using the CC option when trying to send the same e-mail to a large group of contacts. The drawback is that everyone can see all the e-mail addresses to whom the mail has been forwarded to, making the other recipients prone to spammers. If you must send to a group of recipients, better use the BCC or blind carbon copy option.

Do not interchange the “reply” and “reply all” option.

It’s easy to make a mistake and hit the reply all button instead of the reply button. As a result, your message will be sent to all the addresses in your account to the email you’re replying to. The problem comes in when you do not intend for everyone else to read your message. It can result to a really big conflict if you don’t use e-mail options carefully.

Responding to an e-mail without verifying its source.

People often get e-mails that may say, you’ve won a prize or money, offering you a money-making opportunity, requesting you to confirm bank details and others. These e-mails may contain messages that may excite you but don’t feel tempted to respond in any way. Instead, immediately delete it from your inbox.

Using obvious passwords.

Most people often use their birthdays, their names or their mother’s names as passwords because they’re easy to remember. However, hackers can easily guess these types of passwords and can put your identity at risk.  Instead, use alphanumeric and random passwords that are more difficult to guess and track. If you’re worried about forgetting them, write it down in a notebook and keep it in a safe place in your home that only you would know.
