Effective Postcard Design Tips

January 27, 2010 By: ecpmmain Category: Postcard Marketing and Advertising Articles

In postcard marketing, the design is a crucial element.  Not only does a good design make a postcard look more attractive, it can also make your message clearer and easier to understand.  So how do you come up with a great design?  Here are some tips:

Design Both Sides

Instead of just designing the front side of your postcard, savvy marketers recommend designing both the front and the back so the recipient can immediately see your message regardless of which side the card faces up.

Don’t Clutter with Words

Do not try to squeeze in too many information on one postcard that it becomes cluttered.  Do not use a very small font size just to include a long message.  Don’t make it difficult for your reader to figure out the printed words.  Make sure that there is enough white space on the card.

Design for Display

A good way to determine a great postcard design is to see if anyone would want to display it on the refrigerator door or on their inspiration board.  When a recipient puts it up on display, more people will be able to read your message.

Choose the Right Colors

Warm colors like yellow and red are vibrant and can instantly add life to a postcard.  Meanwhile, cool colors like blue and green are known to appeal more to intellect.  When choosing colors, make sure that they will be a complement your message.

Make Sure the Design Fits

When designing your postcard, always consider your message.  If you want to use graphics or images, it should be to enhance the words on the card.  Be careful not to overdo on the visual elements.  You want your design to complement, not to overshadow your message.

Quality Printing Makes Sense

Make sure that the image or graphics on your postcard is well-printed.  Even though you made a great lay-out and design, if you’ve chosen a poor printing service, then your postcard will still appear unimpressive.  Furthermore, using quality paper is important to get the results you want.

Send Big Cards

Bigger postcards (6”x9” or 6”x11”) are impossible to ignore.  Although bigger postcards may be a little more expensive than standard-sized cards, they are sure to get anyone’s attention.
